2007 vintage

Mother Nature teaches us patience and courage...

2007 has been a irritating vintage, devoted to courageous and calm winegrowers. Alike 1997, april was sunny, very hot, too much hot and dry. Heedful winemakers mistrust  that kind of weather that is not in time... And they're right: From may to august, we had to face difficult climatic conditions, often cool, sometimes rainy. More than usual, preventive measures in the vineyard were efficient: Leaf-plucking, debudding, green harvesting to allow air to circulate and "light up" the grapes. Increasing trellises to maximum surface allowed greather exposure to the sun, awaiting september and october that turned out to be salvatory. Anticyclonic conditions arrived on august, 30th, and high temperature variations between night and day allowed the grapes to ripen very slowly, reminding us of the fact that we are still at the northern limit, still a cool climate area, whatever climatic changes... In such conditions, I don't remimber how many times I tasted juices, chewed skins, crunched seeds to evaluate the ripeness progress. I also spent some time visiting other producers, who cracked up one after the other and started harvest often too early.  Mother Nature sometimes asks us too much patience. When we started the reds on september 26th, it was really slowly, which would have been a shame for my grandfather ! One block, one vat, one day... We even waited one week between the merlots and the cabernets sauvignons, giving them all the chances to be splendid. And they were ! Very deep, intense. Outstanding cabernets, whom maturation is so slow on our clayey soils, but turn out to be the kings of our small kingdom every two years...

Sauvignons show firm acidity and brim with earthy citrus, grapefruit, broom, mineral notes and tropical fruits. Semillons are delicate. Merlots are round, medium to full-bodied and show a small lack of density that ageing on lees should fulfil, with appealing flavours of wild berry, blackberry, and black cherry together with earthy aromas. Cabernets exhibit great intensity and character. The core flavors of blackcurrant and wild berry have a touch of exotic fruits and show no vegetal character, a real challenge for the vintage. Although of low acidity levels, their are full-bodied, polyphenolic levels being over 100. They will definitely take more place than usual in the 2007 Heritage blend.
